In the spiritual tradition of alchemy, red coral symbolizes the kundalini energy. A fitting metaphor: RED is the color of (kundalini) fire and of the first chakra, the abode of this divine energy before awakening. CORAL is precious and is located deep under water. WATER is an archetype for the subconscious. In the picture on the right, an alchemist is fishing red coral from a river.

Through alchemy, the red coral as a symbol for a kundalini awakening ended up in the tarot (see image on the far right) and Christian art (below).

The alchemist fishes RED CORAL (the kundalini) out of the water (his subconscious). The ANGEL blowing air in the direction of the coral (top left) means that the coral is of DIVINE ORIGIN. (Atalanta Fugiens, 1617)

Throughout the ages there have always been initiates, artists and mystics who knew that Jesus was not born as ‘the Son of God’, but had experienced a kundalini awakening, after which he was one with his Divine Father. The Gospel writers have hidden this spiritual truth in their texts in inventive ways, including the use of symbolism and wordplay (see my books). Because of the rigid attitude of the church, the truth could not be spoken aloud, but underground, through esoteric groups such as the Freemasons, it found its way onto the canvas.

In Christian Renaissance paintings, the baby Jesus sometimes wears a red coral necklace and/or bracelet. The explanation that is usually given is that at the time it was believed that red coral offered a protection against witchcraft, disease and misfortune. From the rest of the symbolism in the same paintings, we can deduce that the artists used the red coral as an esoteric symbol for a kundalini awakening.

THE SIGN OF THE SACRED MARRIAGE (two fingers together: 2=1) is incorporated in many paintings, in one form or another, often in combination with other esoteric symbolism. This hand gesture refers to a fusion of the polar energies/duality, and with this to a process of kundalini awakening.

Bernardo di Stefano Rosselli, circa 1500. The red coral NECKLACE, which runs from the PELVIS to the HEAD of the baby Jesus, is a reference to a kundalini process. Ditto the transparent SCARF. Mary subtly makes the sign of the SACRED MARRIAGE 2=1 (click here) with both hands. The CROSSED LEGS (click here) of Jesus also refer to the SACRED MARRIAGE.

Tuscan school, late 15th century. The baby Jesus is holding his mother’s transparent SHAWL. The shawl SPIRALS like a SERPENT up to Mary’s head and ends in a KNOT (click here), which represents the PINEAL GLAND.

Bernardo Zenale. A STAFF (click here) is also a symbol for the awakened spine.

Giovanni Antonio Licinio da Pordenone, 1500. The CORD around Mary’s waist refers to the KNOT OF ISIS (click here), a symbol from Ancient Egypt that stands for the SACRED MARRIAGE (2=1).

Ambrogio Bergognone, circa 1500. The baby Jesus has a red coral NECKLACE in his hand, with his other HAND he makes the sign of the sacred marriage: “I have made the two one”.

Amico Aspertini. The baby Jesus stands with ONE LEG (click here) pulled up, and points to the BIBLE and to the red coral NECKLACE: on a deeper level the stories in the Bible are about a kundalini awakening as the way to the Kingdom of God! Angelo Puccinelli, circa 1395. The two fingers of Mary with the piece of coral in between, symbolize the THREE ENERGY CHANNELS involved in a kundalini awakening.

Bernardino Zaganelli. The TRIANGLE (click here) refers to the SACRUM. The TRUMPET symbolizes the FLOWING of the kundalini through the spine.

Bernaerd van Orley. The young John the Baptist points at the PILLAR (click here). It symbolizes the awakened SPINE. The colors BLACK, WHITE AND RED of Mary’s CLOTHING refer to the three phases of the alchemical MAGNUM OPUS (click here). The MAN AND WOMAN in the background symbolize the SACRED MARRIAGE (2=1), they also wear clothes in the colors BLACK, WHITE AND RED.

Matteo da Gualdo, 1477. The baby Jesus makes the sign of SACRED MARRIAGE 2=1 (click here) and holds his HEAD against that of his mother. This symbolizes the MERGER of the masculine and feminine energies/duality. He points with his HAND UNDER THE DRESS of his mother: the birth of the divine child is an INNER event, and the result of a kundalini awakening (the NECKLACE with red coral).

Joos van Cleve, 1510. The baby Jesus has ONE LEG (click here) stretched out, and bent ONE LEG bent; this is a reference to SACRED MARRIAGE (2=1).

Master of Sint Goedele, 1475. The TRIANGLE (click here) of RED CORAL refers to the SACRUM, the place where the kundalini resides. Mary Magdalene (right) points at her PELVIS. Read about Mary’s kundalini awakening in my bookMary Magdalene, the disciple whom Jesus loved.

Gerard David. The way Mary has folded her HANDS is a reference to the SPINE.
